In Love With Ellen Page: "Hard Candy"

What do you call a rebellious, brash and talented teen actor? A maverick? No, that's so Sarah Palin. You call her Ellen Page.
Granted, Ms Page is not a teen anymore but she is still rebellious, brash and very talented. And dare I mention sexy? At only 21 years old, she has already been nominated for Golden Globe and Academy Award for the title role of Juno. She has won many others which you can check out on her Wikipedia page if you want to. Or you could stay for the eye candy.

Okay, I'll admit it. I haven't watched Juno yet. It's on the top of my movie list right now. Even though I had never seen the young starlet on screen until last week, I knew a bit about her and have definitely been into her for a long time. Courtesy AfterEllen.com and my gaydar.

What with her coming #6 on The 2008 AfterEllen.com Hot 100 (trust me, lesbians do have a better taste in "hot" women than straight guys), and her playing along with the lesbian rumors surrounding her and showing off her sense of humor on a lesbianish skit on Saturday Night Live, she has reserved herself a cosy little place right here in my committment-phobic heart.

I watched Hard Candy last week and immediately fell in love with Ms Page. She, along with her beautiful eyes and unapologetic strength of character, took my heart and ballooned it to the size of an African elephant.
She plays a mature, intellectual 14 year old Hayley on her first real-life meet up with Jeff, a 32 year old photographer she met on the Internet. Upon her suggestion they go to Jeff's house to listen to a Goldfrapp MP3 Jeff recorded. Hayley refuses the drink Jeff offers, saying that she mustn't drink anything that she didn't mix herself. She then proceeds to mix them both screwdrivers and then proposes that Jeff take pictures of her like the ones of young girls that adorn his walls. She takes off her shirt and does "the music video shit" as Jeff suddenly feels disoriented and collapses.

She spiked his drink.

Jeff wakes up tied to a computer chair as Hayley searches the whole house for proof of his pedophilia as well as clues to missing teenage girl Donna Mauer who she accuses Jeff of raping and murdering. She later tells him of his impending castration which will be a service to the society.

While I savoured her cute self playing a 14 year old, torturing a 32 year old pedophilic man for confession of his crimes with a vengeance, I also tackled my not-so-mavericky friends' questions about what pedophile and castration are.

Patrick Wilson is almost as wonderful as Ms Page. He very convincingly plays Jeff -- a suave, high-end photographer who is, in fact, also a pedophilic sexual predator. He gives his best at those times when he is vulnerable and angry.

There is hardly any music in the movie, with heavy breathing making up most of the limited background sound. Almost the whole movie is shot indoors with close focus on the characters faces and facial expressions. There is a stark contrast in the color tone of the movie changing from bright to bluish right after Jeff collapses. The change marks the turning point of the movie whence the hunted becomes the hunter.
A controversial story, a good cast and intense performance make Hard Candy a wonderful movie. Though it may not be suitable for general audiences, it is perfect according to my tastes. If you like obscure movies and haven't seen this one yet, what the hell are you waiting for?
